OUR LEGACY

It all began with our invention of the first dry cell battery back in the 1890s. Since then, our pioneering spirit has driven us forward, leaving behind a rich history of highlights across numerous consumer brands.

1896

W.H. Lawrence invents the first dry cell battery for consumer use.

1898

Conrad Hubert invents the first handheld flashlight.

1905

Conrad Hubert renames his company The American Ever Ready Company.

1914

The American Ever Ready Company becomes part of National Carbon Company. Hubert stays on as president. The trademark is shortened to EVEREADY ®.

1917

National Carbon Company merges with Union Carbide to form the Union Carbide and Carbon Company.

1955

EVEREADY® introduces the first miniature batteries for hearing aids.

1956

EVEREADY® invents the first 9-volt battery.

1958

EVEREADY® introduces the EVEREADY Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable battery system.

1959

EVEREADY® scientist Lewis Urry revolutionizes the battery industry by introducing the first commercially viable cylindrical alkaline battery.

EVEREADY® introduces the first rechargeable flashlight.

1975

EVEREADY® introduces the EVEREADY® economy light – the world’s most popular flashlight.

1980

EVEREADY® introduces the Energizer® brand.

1983

The Company introduces the first fluorescent flashlight, requiring less frequent bulb changing.

1986

Union Carbide sells the Eveready Battery Company to Ralston Purina Company.

1989

EVEREADY® leads the industry in environmental initiatives and offers the first zero-added mercury product.

1989

The Energizer Bunny® is born - his TV debut.

1992

EVEREADY® introduces Energizer® e2®, the first AA lithium battery.

1996

EVEREADY® introduces the company’s first LED lights, offering a squeeze light, compact area/directional light and a bicycle light.

1998

EVEREADY® celebrates 100 years of portable lighting product leadership.

1999

EVEREADY® scientist, Lew Urry, is honored by having his invention – the first alkaline battery – placed into the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Eveready Battery Company is spun-off from Ralston Purina Company. Energizer Holdings, Inc. is created.

Energizer Holdings, Inc. announces intent to separate the Household Products and Personal Care divisions into two independent, publicly traded companies.

2015

Energizer introduces the world’s first AA battery made with 4% recycled batteries – Energizer® EcoAdvanced™.

Energizer Holdings, Inc. is spun-off from Edgewell Personal Care to create two standalone, publicly traded companies.

Energizer Holdings acquires HandStands Holding Corporation.
